About Me

Omar Sabbagh is a very widely-published poet, writer and critic.  Born in 1981 in London to Lebanese parents, after a stellar school career at KCS Wimbledon, he went on to study PPE at Oxford University from 1999-2002.  From 2003-2004 he completed an MA in English Literature at KCL, achieving a high Distinction and coming 3rd in a class of 55.  After beginning a PhD in English Literature at Cambridge in 2005, and having resigned from it for personal reasons, from 2006-2007 he completed a second MA in Creative and Life Writing at Goldsmith’s College, University of London.  Half-way through that (second) MA, he also and once again began PhD research at KCL, completing a passing thesis on Time and Narrative in Joseph Conrad and Ford Madox Ford in early 2011.  His first full-time job was as a Visiting Assistant Professor of English Literature and Creative Writing at the American University of Beirut (AUB) (where his own parents met), from 2011-2013.  From 2013-2014 he completed a third MA in Philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London.  In Fall of 2014 he began as an Assistant Professor of English at the American University in Dubai (AUD), where he still teaches at present, but now as an Associate Professor of English.

He began his multi-genre writing career in 2002/3.  His first ever publication in 2004 was a short story, ‘Benches’, published in the anthology, Transit Beirut (Saqi Books, 2004).  In 2005, in the wake of his first MA, his first scholarly paper was published, on George Eliot.  And then, having started to write poetry with serious intent from the summer of 2006, he was soon very fortunately published in some of the UK’s most prestigious poetry or more broadly literary journals, such as: Poetry Review, PN Review, The Reader Magazine, The Warwick Review, Stand, Banipal, Agenda, The Wolf, among many others.  His poetry since those early days and efforts has also appeared to date in venues such as: (T&F) New Writing, New Humanist, Kenyon Review and New England Review.  He has five full collections of poetry published, My Only Ever Oedipal Complaint, The Square Root of Beirut, To The Middle of Love, But It Was an Important Failure, Morning Lit: Portals After Alia (Cinnamon Press, 2010, 2012, 2017, 2020, 2022).  His next poetry collection, For Echo is due for publication in Spring 2024, with Cinnamon Press again.  Since 2012, roughly, he has written and had published tens and tens of articles and essays, ranging from peer-reviewed scholarly papers, to literary criticism, to literary journalism (reviewing) and other kinds of belles lettres.  Much of his best critical writing was collated in his, To My Mind Or Kinbotes, published by Whisk(e)y Tit Books in 2021.  In 2020 Anthem Press published his single-author study: Reading Fiona Sampson: A Study in Contemporary Poetry and Poetics.  Two of his published novellas, out of Beirut and then out of Dubai, are, Via Negativa: A Parable of Exile (Liquorice Fish Books, 2016), and Minutes from the Miracle City (Fairlight Books, 2019).  He has published much short fiction and creative nonfiction, too, some prize-winning; and a collection of most of his best short-form creative or directly imaginative prose, published between 2004 and 2022 is collated in Y Knots: Short Fictions (Liquorice Fish Books, Oct. 2023).  Finally, his book of Lebanese verse narratives, Cedar: Scenes from Lebanese Life, was published with Northside House in 2023.

The vocation of writing, across disciplines and genres, is more than just a wish or desire for him; he writes from a deep-bowelled need to deploy the English language under the various disciplines of form.

Immerse yourself in the magic of imagination and embark on unforgettable literary journeys.
